What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin. They are most common in the legs and feet.
Varicose veins are caused by weakened or damaged leaflet valves of the superficial leg veins.
For some people varicose or spider veins are simply a cosmetic problem without any symptoms.
For others varicose veins can cause discomfort, throbbing and burning sensations, muscle cramps, swelling of the ankles and itching along the veins.
The most serious complications are inflammation of the veins leading to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), brown discolouration of the skin, stasis ulcer of the calves and if the skin overlying the vein is thin or irritated spontaneous bleeding may occur.

  • Obesity
  • Age

The health care professional will review your medical history, examine the extent of the varicose veins and/or spider veins and determine any potential risk factors.

Most patients will require an ultrasound test of the legs to diagnose any venous incompetencies and to rule out Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
